Axel Springer became the first major global publisher to sign a deep partnership with OpenAI. ChatGPT users see summaries of selected Axel Springer titles (Politico, Business Insider, Bild, Welt) including paywalled content, with attribution links back to source articles. OpenAI also licenses Axel Springer archives for model training. The deal set the template for publisher-AI content licensing that News Corp, FT, and others built on in 2024.
